History of Football: The Top 10 Greatest Teams of All Time

The history of football has seen many teams come and go,
some of which have dominated the sport to the extent that their legacy can
never be forgotten. These are the top 10 greatest teams ever to grace the
football pitch, listed in no particular order

What are the greatest football teams?

The greatest football teams are the ones that have won the
most championships. It's difficult to compare teams from different eras, but
there are some teams who have been dominant in their time periods. Here is a
list of the top 10 teams ever in football

Brazil 1970

FIFA Confederation cups. They were runners up for another two World Cups.
Brazil are one of only four teams to have competed in every FIFA World Cup
tournament, from 1930 to 2002. The other three being Uruguay (not eliminated
until 1950), Italy (not eliminated until 1978), and France (not eliminated
until 1982). The Brazilian team has won their qualifying groups more times than
any other country.

Argentina 1986

Argentina's 1986 team is the best competitor in football
world cup history. They are considered one of the top 10 teams ever in football
and have won two world cups. Their first victory came when they beat West
Germany 3-2 in Mexico 86, with Jorge Burruchaga scoring a spectacular goal from
a tight angle. The final was played at a time in history when only European
teams had dominated the game but Argentina proved it could play on their level.

Barcelona 1992

Barcelona's 1992 team was the greatest football squad in
history. They had a great defense and plenty of skillful players. They won the
European Cup Winners' Cup and La Liga, as well as beating Sampdoria 2-0 to win
the UEFA Supercup for an unprecedented four trophies in one season. In 1992,
Ajax were considered the top club in Europe, but Barcelona ended their run at
19 consecutive wins by beating them 1-5.

West Germany 1974

West Germany may not be the first team that comes to mind
when you think of the best competitors in football history, but this team did
win two world cups. In 1974, West Germany beat Holland 2-1 with goals from Gerd
Muller and Wolfgang Overath in Munich to capture their second world cup title.
Another reason they are so memorable is because they were the first country to
represent West Germany as a unified nation. They were also one of only three
teams, along with Brazil and Italy, who played in every World Cup tournament
from 1930-2002.

Ajax 1995

The 1995 Ajax squad is arguably the best club team in the
history of football. Coached by Louis Van Gaal, this Dutch powerhouse won six
out of seven competitions they entered, including the Champions League and the
European Super Cup. Despite finishing second domestically to PSV Eindhoven, an
impressive 4-1 victory over defending champions AC Milan in the UEFA Champions
League final secured their first ever title for Ajax’s all-time greatest team.

Milan 2003

In 2003, Milan became the first team to win the Champions
League three times in a row. They were awarded the title Best Competitor in football
history. Other great teams that have achieved this goal include Ajax Amsterdam
(1971), Bayern Munich (1974), Liverpool (1977), AC Milan (1989) and FC
Barcelona (1992).

Manchester United 2008/09

Manchester United were the most successful team in English
football history, with a record 20 league titles, 12 FA Cups and 4 European
Cups. They have won more top-flight games, drawn more matches and lost fewer
games than any other team in English football history. With Alex Ferguson at
the helm for 26 years from 1986 to 2013, their success spanned three decades.
The all-time leading goalscorer for Manchester United is Wayne Rooney with 253
goals (sixth overall).

AC Milan 1991

AC Milan won the European Cup for three consecutive years
from 1988 to 1990, when they beat Benfica 4-1 in the final. They also won two
UEFA Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups that year. That gave them six
major international titles out of seven at a time where no club had ever
managed such a feat. What makes this team one of the greatest football teams

ever is their dominance domestically as well.

Real Madrid 1960/61

In 1960/61, Real Madrid was just beginning to become the
dominant force in European football. Their roster included world-class players
such as Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas. They defeated Eintracht Frankfurt
7–3 on aggregate in the semi-final before meeting Benfica for their first ever
final. It was not a close affair as Real outplayed their opponents by a score
of 5–1 with goals coming from Di Stéfano (2), Enrique Mateos (2) and Francisco
Gento.

Liverpool 1984/85

Liverpool was the first English club to win three European
Cups, and they did it twice in succession. In 1984/85 they won the league, FA
Cup, League Cup and European Cup all in one season. They were runners up in the
Charity Shield but by then had already become champions of England, Europe and
Great Britain. The success came with a price, however; goalkeeper Bruce
Grobbelaar admitted that he took bribes from illegal bookmakers on behalf of
his teammates.
